Last month we had a little accident. It was quite the ordeal. Well, it didn't seem to get much better, at least in someways.
Right after the accident Chris began to talk with the insurance company. They had told him because the van was older they were most likely going to total it out. So we started looking at "new to us" vans. We studied it out. Researched different brands. Then we hit the streets and began looking at different cars. The kids were such troopers. It was hot and boring work. But we found a couple of vans we were interested in. So we were going to wait until the end of the month to buy a van. Mainly because we had a trip to Nauvoo planned and we felt rushed trying to get that in, so adding a car purchase right before hand seemed like a bad decision. HA! One of those shopping days would have been a dream!
We were planning to leave on Thur from Chris' work. SO I dropped him off that morning at work so we could pick him up on the way out of town. But the plan changed in a big way. A few hours before we were going to leave (I was already SOOOO behind in packing) I got a call from the car rental agent stating that the insurance stopped paying back on Monday. WHAT! I hung-up on the guy (I am so sorry car rental dude!) And called Chris. He called the insurance and they agreed to pay through Saturday noon. Well, a little problem. We were going to be out of town. (We had considered in the research stage buying a car on our way to or from Nauvoo.... but the logistics were ridiculous) So we decided to buy a car there and then. So I went and picked-up Chris and we drove to the dealership and bought the van.
We then went home and finished packing...the we had the crazy idea to still leave that night. So we found an after hours drop off for the car. It was quite the process since Chris called the rental office and they said they could not accept anymore returns because they were full. But it took us so long to switch all the luggage, move car seats around, and carry 3 sleeping kids to the van the office closed. So we took it to the airport after hours drop off. It was the oddest way I have ever started a trip. I love a little spontaneity every once in awhile, but I think a major purchase spur of the moment may have filled my quota for awhile.
We love our van. We are still figuring everything out. But it is FUN!
